Monday Mindfulness: Standing Awareness

It’s no surprise, mindfulness can be practiced anywhere. It’s simply about engaging attention in the present moment and letting our minds be full with the experience of here and now with a non-judgemental attitude. Today’s tip invites us to bring some mindful awareness as we stand. Let’s get started.

Step 1: Find a place where you can stand and be undisturbed for a few moments. Take a few breaths as you notice the cool air as you inhale, and warmer air as you exhale. Your eyes can be open or closed.

Step 2: Now bring your awareness to your body standing where you are. Notice the weight, pressure and movement of your legs and feet.

Step 3: Become aware of any subtle movements in the rest of your body – your heartbeat, pulse.

Step 4: Now, shift your weight to the left foot, and notice the shift of muscle movements and pressure. Hold for a few breaths. Now shift to your right foot and again notice any changes. Continue to weight shift from your left to your right as notice these micro-sensations. After a few cycles, come back to center and just stand for a moments. When you feel ready,open your eyes.

Bring this standing awareness into your day the next time you are either standing in line, waiting for someone, or even standing while having a conversation.
