Monday Mindfulness: Mindfully Drinking

4 tips to mindfully drinking

Mindfulness is simply the practice of engaging attention in the present moment; letting your mind be full with the experience of here and now with a non judgemental attitude. And the best news is that it can literally be practiced anywhere. In today’s tip, we breakdown how to simply sip with a twist of mindfulness. Let’s get started.

Step 1: Grab a glass or bottle of water (or other beverage) and set it in front of you. Take a few natural breaths in and out as you gaze at the water.

Step 2: Pick up the glass or bottle and notice how it feels. Does it have weight? Is it cold or warm? Any thoughts or emotions coming up? Just notice.

Step 3: Bring the glass or bottle to your nose. See if you notice any scents. Then bring up to your lips and pause. When you feel ready, take a sip and hold it in your mouth without swallowing. Swirl it in your mouth and just notice any sensations.

Step 4: When you are ready, swallow slowly and intentionally. Repeat a few more times and just notice what sensations or observations are showing up.

While we used water in this example, it can also be practiced for more “merry merry” cocktails. If you are drinking champagne, gaze at the bubbles. If you are drinking white wine, see if you find specs of clarity. If you are drinking red wine, observe the shades of red. Regardless, allow yourself to fully engage your attention in the present moment and hopefully enjoy the experience in a more meaningful way.
