Monday Mindfulness: Red Light Breathing

This is a great exercise to do when you are en route somewhere whether via car, bike, public transportation, or uber.

Step 1: When you come upon a red light, simply match your inhale (3 counts) to your exhale (3 counts).
Step 2: Continue to focus on this breath pattern for the entire cycle of the red light (ideally with the radio off).
Step 3: Practice at every red light you encounter throughout your day.

Red lights are literally cues from our external world to STOP. As you cultivate this practice, you may become aware of the natural tendencies to grab your phone or play with the radio. Practice simply being in silence and focusing on your breath. Think of red lights as a sign from the universe to treat ourselves to the nourishing power of pause.
